A website without good SEO planning can often lead to it being lost in amongst millions of sites resulting in the website never receiving little or no visitors at all. SEO should not only be beneficial to you but also the Search Engine and the visitors. SEO, known as Search Engine Optimisation, is a practice of making your website friendly to Search Engines and visitors. The belief towards making your website friendly for Search Engines is that it will result in higher rankings and positioning for keywords and ultimately first page location. This idea works hand in hand with visitors who, after keying in your keyword, should see a website that is easy to read, well written, informative and providing information that they have been looking for, whether this is a sales page, general topic information etc.

The first area I look at when I'm designing a new website or doing research is the webpage title. This is the written text found at the very top of the browser not the name of your website. Your webpage title should contain your most prominent and searched for keywords. For example, if you have a website about car hire in London, you could include the following in your title: "London Car Hire, Car Rental, Van Hire, Vehicle Hire". During my research, I often find well designed and pretty webpages that only contain the name of the webpage in the webpage title and as a result limit themselves in searches to only the name of their website. One factor which is so important is to include keywords in your title of your website thus resulting in a better possible match for the search engine when the relevant words are typed in. Try and limit the title to about 60-70 characters, including spaces, as search engines may penalize you for having too many words in the title of your page. Many people also use variances on words. For example, 'colour' and 'color' or 'mum' and 'mom', depending which country they are targeting. Also, the title should read correctly not something like 'Car Hire Carhire London, Vanrental, hire....' etc.

Once I've decided on my keywords for my title, I ensure that they are included in my webpage in the HTML code and in the h1 headings. If you go to a webpage, click on 'View' then 'Source' this will result in viewing HTML programming of the page. In most cases somewhere near the top of the code you should see 'META KEYWORDS' and h1 titles. Good SEO practice says that you should include in your webpage title your meta keywords. If you have too many keywords than the recommended length of the webpage title, you should include in your title the main ones you want to target. Regarding h1 title tags, this is predominately for titles on the page. I often use the website title on the page at the top, including the same words in the title to let the visitor know what the website is about.

Now I have my webpage title containing my keywords, my meta keywords listed and my h1 title, I then design and write my webpage. Keeping a note of my keywords, the first paragraph starts with one of the keywords. I write several paragraphs on the page and within in the paragraphs I write around my keywords, varying them. I try and aim to include the keyword once in each paragraph. Remember, you have to ensure that your paragraph reads as it should to the visitor and makes sense. If your keywords are mentioned too often, this will get picked up by the search engine and can be detrimental.

Once I have written my page, I try and finish it with the same keyword that I started the page with. If it was 'Car Hire' then I finish with 'Car Hire'. Now I have finished my page, I check everything off: The Header containing the name of my website, the left panel containing the navigation menu and the main panel containing the text with my keywords in each paragraph, including spelling and grammar.

Now I have my webpage and I publish it, I then go about promoting the page itself rather than the whole website. Many internet marketers I know concentrate on getting links to the website rather than the webpage. Personally, I would always concentrate on getting links to the page which ultimately leads to links in my site. Firstly, I deep link where I can, remembering not to over do it. The process is when you link from one page in your website to another page in your website. The most common way of deep linking is through anchor texts - links on words that take you to another page. Example: the anchor text for 'work from home' is highlighted below which takes me to a page about working from home. Your anchor text used should be a keyword for the resulting page. In this case, 'Work From Home' is a keyword for the landing page, the page shown when the visitor clicks on the highlighted text. After I've deep linked my pages, I then look at getting links to the pages.

Links to the pages are simple - anchor texts. I write 1 article containing 3 anchor texts of 3 keywords found in the title and on the webpage and vary it 5 times by changing paragraphs, titles, sentences and resource box details. I then send my 5 articles to 20 - 30 article directories. If all 30 directories publish 1 article, then that's 90 anchor texts pointing to the targeted webpage. Just imagine if all 5 are published.

Lastly, I submit to free directories (and paid ones) the website details and vary the anchor text alternating my keywords, and I use SEO Software to find reciprocal linking partners with the same keywords and to continue my SEO research.

Let's face it; the average business owner has neither the time nor the inclination to learn the nuances of search engine optimization. When I was first introduced to the concept of search marketing, I spent endless hours researching forums and blog trying to separate the signal from the noise. There's no shortage of information and advice for business owners out there in theinterwebz , but finding trustworthy and reliable sources is another monster entirely. I would estimate that I invested hundreds of hours researching reliable sources ofSEO and SEM information, and I am thrilled to this day when I discover new ones. The real key to local search visibility is to recognize that your location is your brand. In most cases, searches with local intent rarely reflect brand terms. In the research I have seen, most local searches are industry and/or service based with geographic qualifiers. For example, "boston emergency plumber" or "san diego pediatric dentist" are more likely to be searched for than "city name + your business name". If people are searching for your business by name, that's great! You've done a great job establishing your brand! But if your sole focus is on brand promotion, you are missing out on some great opportunities to develop relationships with new customers in your area. Recent research has shown that almost 40% of allinternet searches are local in intent. If you want to maintain a lead over your competition, now is the time to take action. The following short-list of actionable items will help get you started:

1. Get listed at all of the major local search engines and telecom directories. Start with Google Local and Yahoo Local. If you don't have the time to manually submit your listings, this is an excellent option.

Will You Still Respect Me in the Morning? SEO Ethics Defined

What is ethical search engine optimization? Is Professional SEO the same as Ethical SEO? This seems to be a really hot topic of debate. Maybe I am looking at this too simplistically, but the answers seem very clear.

SEO guidelines originate with the search engines. Each search engine has its own set of rules, which are clearly posted for all to see. It is laid out in black and white as to what "to do" and what "not to do." So, if the search engines are stating the rules, what is all the controversy about?

Is the controversy the interpretation of the guidelines? What one person reads and understands one way, another may completely interpret or understand differently. This can lead to what is considered "Gray Hat." This area is where the boundaries seem to get tested more frequently; some push slightly harder than others, which can be a topic of debate.

My opinion regarding Gray Hat is that you should not use any method you don't feel comfortable explaining to Google (or other search engines) if required. Testing boundaries is not necessarily a bad thing. This is how many new acceptable techniques are revealed to work with the changing technology of websites.

Then, there are those who march to their own drummers and do whatever they feel will give them a better position. Interpretation is not an issue with them. They have bigger problems to address. This practice is known as "Black Hat." Black Hat may work for the short term. However, this practice could and probably will get their sites 8-balled by the search engines. My philosophy is simple; if you are trying to deliberately trick a search engine you are wasting your time and someone else's money. Why not do it right the first time?

There is more to being ethical than simply following the rules of the search engines. SEO did not get its reputation for being the "Used Car Salesmen" of the Internet by just abusing these guidelines.

Many of my clients have horror stories of past experiences with some of these unethical SEO companies, ranging from the "false promise" of a top three position in Google in three days, to having their SEO company disappear with their money. The scams are too numerous to list.

How many good companies have had regrettable experiences with unethical SEO companies and are not willing to take another chance? How many reputable SEO companies have been given a "black eye" by the unethical practices of others? If the answer is only one, it is one too many.

Purchasing a membership to obtain a seal to display on a site stating only "Ethical SEO" will be practiced does not make a company ethical. The entrepreneurs that sell these memberships cannot police every member, nor should it be necessary. I understand the concept and in theory it is a great idea. 5. Text rules everything in web content. Search engine spiders ignore Javascript, they ignore graphics, and until very recently, they couldn't read text in Flash animations. If the search engine spiders can't read it, it doesn't get used to help your page rankings.

The real secret to long term success with web site optimization is to make sure your site is usable and interesting, both to the search engine spiders and to your human visitors. Installation if you've got cpanel hosting with Fantastico, you can do the Wordpress installation in a few minutes because the installation scripts are probably pre-installed already for you! If not, it might take a little longer, but the Wordpress guys take pride in the "5 minute install" concept. It is really easy - even if you've got to download the application, unzip it, upload it to your site into it's own directory, add a new MySQL database, add a user, start the configuration file and insert the database / user /password details into the configuration file, it should be up and running inside 30 minutes. Be a good idea to read through the "Read Me " file before you start... the instructions are clearing, concise, and in a logical and coherent order! Pity all documentation was not like that! :-)

Configuration with Wordpress, there are a handful of system settings to consider once you've got your blog operational. Of these, I'd say the three most important are as follows;

1: Options / Writing / Update Services

The setting for the automatic update services, where blog search engines, directories and news feed services are "pinged" each time you add new content. By default, Wordpress includes a few services, some of which will in turn update other services. However, you will probably want the widest coverage possible, and to extend that list to include all known services! Takes a little longer to process a new posting, but means you get the best overall result... and that's what it's all about!

2: Options / Permalinks

As they put it; "By default WordPress uses web URL's which have question marks and lots of numbers in them, however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward-compatibility of your links."

From an SEO point of view, we've chosen the numeric options so that our URL's not only look sensible, but the Search Engines will be also be able to navigate them. However, getting this arcane bit of trickery to work requires you to implement the supplied "mod_rewrite" in your .htaccess file... if you are developing a glazed look about now, just bear with me a little longer! :-)

The .htaccess file is a dangerous area to be playing in, as a mistake in this file can render your site inaccessible - until the Host Company's support guy sorts it out for you - usually by renaming it! How do I know so much about this shit? Well, it happened to ME! :-)

You should have installed your blog into its own directory, which minimizes the potential problems substantially! Wordpress provides the correct "mod_rewrite" code in;

RewriteEngine on RewriteBase /yourblog/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . [/If Module]

So, choose the Numeric Option 1) Copy it into a text file - e.g. open Notepad, paste the code in. 2) Save it as htaccess.txt in your local copy of your site 3) Choose Update Settings in Wordpress Options / Permalinks 4) Use FTP to upload htaccess.txt into your BLOG directory - Please, NOT your root directory! 5) Using your FTP application, rename the htacces.txt file to .htaccess

Open your Blog, browse around it and (hopefully) not only will everything be working, but the URL's will now not have any of those dreadful &, ? Or = thingy's embedded in them. If it's not working... the Wordpress support forums offer rapid response times to such teething problems. :-)

3: Categories

From an SEO perspective, it's important to develop a good Category Structure, because the category names are going to be embedded as "tags" in all your Blog posts, a little like the concept of the "keyword meta-tag" and this will help define and describe your content.

Content Now that you've got the basics sorted out, start populating your blog with some quality content. I recommend writing it in an HTML editor such as FrontPage) because you can the make sure it's spell-checked as you go. Once you've got it formatted the way you want, go to the Wordpress / Write / Write Page and paste it in. Add the Title, select your Category/s from the right menu, and click the "Save and Continue Editing" button. You will then have a preview of your article in the lower section of the page. Double-check the formatting, and when you are happy with it, choose "Publish."

Black Hat and White Hat are two methods used in SEO. White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned once the search engines discover what they are doing.

Holiday Mayhem

I decided, (in my infinite wisdom) to make major changes to my site to try to get my page rank back up to pr3, (my site has dropped a page rank for some reason from 3 to 2) the day before going on holiday for 2 weeks in France. Luckily we were staying at my in-laws house who have moved over to France, (call that luck?) anyway, after a 13 hour journey we arrived at my in-laws house & paid them for our stay in curry sauces, naan breads, teabags, baked beans & paracetamol tablets, (you'll never believe the prices of those items over there) & switched on their computer to check Google Webmaster Tools. To my horror I noticed that I had major warnings about my sitemap! In a fit of panic I rang my neighbour's house & gave them instructions on how to change my sitemap, about 30 minutes later, I received a phone call from them saying that my computer would not start! Oh dear, I thought, (cannot print what I actually thought) so in a fit of panic I suggested to my wife that we go back to the UK to sort it out, "calm down" she replied, (it's ok for her, she was not running about like a headless chicken) "can you not create another sitemap while being in France?" why didn't I think of that? so, straight away I went online & purchased the same site map creator I use in the UK, this cost me around $50.00 but it was cheaper than paying for around 2 tanks of diesel for the car & 2 ferry crossings. Ok, I have now downloaded my site map creator & hopefully made the major repairs to my site map. I was about to resubmit my sitemap to Google when I realised that I had not FTP'd my sitemap to my site, (idiot!) so I luckily got a free FTP program, sent it to my site, published my site & re-submitted it to Google. After around 1 hour I checked my sitemap with Google & everything was fine, (what a relief) so I decided to celebrate with a bottle or two of red wine. Isn't it amazing how, after a couple of drinks you remember all sorts of things? the first thing I remembered was, I did not need to purchase the site-map creator anyway because I still had the download link for my original one in my email inbox & the reason for my computer not starting was because I had unplugged all the various things that get warm even when the computer is not in use! So, if you are intending to go on holiday / vacation try to make your major changes to your site well before you go away, otherwise you also may well be hogging your in-laws or friends computer for some time. Recently SEOMoz did a survey among the top SEO experts. The results were surprising to say the least. None of the SEO experts could come to a 100 percent agreement on any one subject! No if they can't come to an agreement on SEO and link building, how is the rest of the World supposed to?

Rand surveyed the Top 37 SEO experts in the World. Basically the Survey is a series of questions asked to each expert. This group of experts could not come up with an agreement rating more than 1 on many of the questions!

So now that we know the experts can't agree, I might as well tell you the mistakes I've made plus the ones I see done by many Webmasters when link building.

Failing to procure reciprocal links. I've seen so called SEO Guru's say that reciprocal linking is dead and they will hurt your site. This just isn't so. The important thing to remember is to make sure they links your trade are from quality sites. It doesn't matter if they're PR0, just make sure they're not from a spam/adult/pharmacy/hate type site. Reciprocal links can be on a resource page if you run a website or a Blogroll for you bloggers. Just remember to trade!

Failing to acquire low PR links. For some reason, many Webmasters do not want PR0 sites linking to them. This is link building suicide! One day, those PR0 sites could be the next PR5 or better. Frankly, I don't care who links to my sites. I can't control it and if they're passing any amount of authority, which even PR0 pass some, I'll take it. It also looks natural when you have many more low authority sites pointing to your site than all high PR sites.

Failing to link out. Once again, we're talking about making your site look natural to the Search Engines, especially Google. Authority sites link out to other authority sites. Google expects to see this. I can't tell you how many times Ive had a site stuck in the SERPS only to get a little boost when I linked to a higher authority site. So link out to authority sites!

Failure to check your reciprocal link partners websites. Once you exchange links with someone, you need to follow up on a routine basis and make sure the link back to your site is still there. Some sites go down, accounts are closed, domains let expired and purchased by someone else, Webmasters changing website topics and some Webmasters simply taking your link down after you exchange links. I've seen people put the "nofollow" attribute on the links after they've made a trade. I've seen it all happen, that's why I monitor my link partners and you should also.

Failing to use Anchor text in your link. If someone gives you the opportunity to use Anchor text in the link back to your site, use it! In my opinion, anchor text in a backlink is the second biggest off page ranking factor for seo. Only the relevancy and authority of the page where the backlink originates is more important in my experience.

Failing to cover up your paid link footprints. Look, from here to the end of time, people will sell links. And from here to the end of time, Google will be trying to find paid links. And from here to the end of time, you'll see blogs, websites and blog networks (think Backlink Solutions) get de indexed for selling links. If you're going to buy or sell links as part of your link building plan, you'd better be hiding your footprint or Big Daddy G is going to find you one dark, cold and stormy night. There are several ways of hiding your footprint, I covered one way in my link laundering article a few weeks ago.

Failing to build links. I see people on the forums all the time asking how they should go about link building or how to get started link building. Many say they don't know how and so they don't even try. People! I hate link building as much as the next person, but it's not Rocket Science. You may be able to rank high in a low competitive keyword niche with on-page SEO, but for a competitive niche where's there's money to be made, you're going to need some relevant backlinks!

TIP: One of the most effective link building strategies you can perform is to find out who's linking to your competition and get links from them. You simply go to Google and type in link:yourcompetitorssite.com. You'll then get a list of sites that are linking to your competitors site. Browse that site to see if there is a place to put a link to your own site at. If not, simply Contact the person running the site and ask kindly for a link. Many times they will not respond, but some will. Now, out of those sites, do the same thing. See who's linking to them and get links from those sites!

This is probably the easiest way to get relevant backlinks but it's a technique very few Bloggers and Webmasters use! Sure it's tedious and time consuming, but in the long run, those top rankings will be worth all the time you practiced link building!

Putting True Discovery back into Keyword Research Volumes

Here is an article I am writing to show readers and students some of the high value that Keyword Discovery offers.

One thing that is extremely important to point out is that the KEI "Keyword Effectiveness System" is completely different in Wordtracker than in Keyword Universe. I'm not saying that one is better than the other. They are just different. KEI is only brought about as a mathematical equation and is the ultimate means for making decisions. It is just a tool. * The search terms extracted are then presented in the "Query" column. * The "Searches" column reports the number of searches from the Global Premium KeywordDiscovery database for that search term. * The "Volume" indicates the percentage of clicks that all the web sites in this DMOZ category receive from each search term.

For example:

Under the heading of "recreation" I chose the term "Birds" which has a volume of 1.22% under the "recreation category." This means 1.22% of all websites categorized under the recreation category are receiving traffic from the keyword, "birds".

When I click on the word "birds" I get a further breakdown that included terms like:

* birds * pet birds * wild birds * birds of prey * humming birds * etc..etc

From this list I chose to click on the phrase "humming birds."

Keep in mind that the volume figures from the industrial terms in Keyword Discovery are calculated by analyzing actual traffic received by sites in this category. This means that it only includes successful searches. This also means that many search terms are not included in this Industry Term database in cases where successful searches, resulting in click throughs to websites that are not indexed by DMOZ. But the information is excellent.

Also note that you can literally look at historical data to analyze trends. Of course some people's search habits change and some things never seem to change. Any way you look at it, the historical data is fascinating.

Next, we click on the phrase "humming birds" again and Keyword Discovery begins showing us some mild behavioral interests such as users seem to want to know more about how to attract humming birds or pictures of humming birds or even about humming birds from a specific area...like Taiwan.

Don't forget you can dig fairly deep and for any phrase you can see the historical data or the trends too which is extremely helpful. Try it for yourself and you'll see what I mean.

What I like most about this Keyword Discovery interface is that within seconds you can identify "historical trends" very easily plus you are looking at genuine volume as opposed to just a figure generated by some math equation.

Watch for some very light revealing behaviors, but the ability to identify peak trends based on seasonally related promotions is exceptional. For this example, I chose something random from the list, but give this feature a whirl around something like Christmas or Halloween or Mothers Day or the 4th of July and I think you'll begin to see it's value for seasonal promotions.

Search Engines like Google and Yahoo have become intelligent in the past 4-5 years. It is very difficult to game search engines nowadays by manipulating tags and keyword stuffing. For a new site it may take 6 to 9 months to achieve competitive rankings at Google. From SEO point of view, I recommend the following steps for launching a new website.

i) Registering a domain name
Pick a domain name which either has keywords associated with your product/service or your brand name. It is better to go for short domain names which are easy to remember. If your target market is global, go for a .com domain. If you are targeting a particular country or language, it is better to register a domain name in TLD of that country. For example, go for a .jp or .co.jp domain, if you are targeting Japan. I recommend you to register the domain for at least 2 years; more the better to gain the trust of search engines.

ii) Domain Hosting
Host your site with a reliable hosting company. Stay away from companies which allow hosting of pharmacy, gambling and adult sites, or have a history of serving spam. If you are targeting a particular country/language, it is advised to host your site in that country to boost your rankings in the local search engines for that country/language.

iii) Registering with Search Engines
Since search engines give important to domain aging and can track parameters like the registration date & first crawled date, you better register your site with search engines as early as possible. Google Filter: Minus 30 penalty

Google is harder to manipulate compared to other search engines because of various filters it incorporates in its algorithm to prevent spam. Minus 30 penalty is one such filter for handling spam in Google algorithm.

So, what is this minus 30 penalty? If your site was previously ranking high in Google search results, and suddenly its ranking drops by 30 positions, there is a chance that the minus 30 penalty is applied to your site. Normally, if you do a search on your domain name, you would expect to see your site at the first position; but if you see your site at 31st position, it is very likely that the minus 30 penalty is in force.

Most likely candidates to experience this penalty are affiliate sites which do not add much value for the site visitors. However, many non-affiliate sites also have reported this penalty. Though there is no proven theory which can identify sites which are likely to face this penalty, sites with excessive low quality inbound or outbound links and lots of non-unique content may have a minus 30 ranking penalty applied.

Multi-lingual websites and Search Engines

Most of my clients in Japan have multi-lingual websites targeted at Japan as well as other foreign countries. So, I always keep looking for techniques which can help to rank well in different local search engines. Recently, I came across a software which claims to improve rankings in Google and other search engines in different languages. Essentially the software creates automatically translated pages of your website in 8 languages. I tested the software and found the automatic translation to be of horrible quality. By merely creating more pages, you can not create quality content. By using such software, you will not only lose your money, but you’ll also lose your prospective customers.

In my experience, it is very difficult to rank a multi-lingual website to rank high across different local search engines. If you really want to target different countries/languages, it is better to have a separate site for each language, and have its content translated by a native speaker of that language. Also, your site will rank better in local search engines if you have domain extension for that country (e.g. .jp for Japan) and you have your site hosted in that country. And, of course, you have to register your site in local search engines. It also makes sense to get links from sites from that country/language.

The additional cost in terms of time, effort and money will definitely bring tons of traffic that converts your prospects well.

Single Canonical URL for better Google ranking

A Common SEO mistake made by many webmasters is that they are not consistent when it comes to linking to their URLs across their site.

If some of your links go to the URL http://yoursite.com, and the rest go to http://www.yoursite.com/, your link popularity gets divided among these two URLs - thus affecting the pagerank as well as the ranking for that URL. So, it is better to pick the URL that you want and use it consistently across your entire website, as well as for your incoming links. One cannot, however, control how other sites would link to his website. So you have to inform Google which URL you prefer to be canonical. Google calls Canonicalization as the process for picking the best URL when there are many alternatives.

‘Google Sitemaps’ offers an option to select a canonical URL for your site. Another way to achieve canonicalization is by adding a 301 redirect (permanent redirect). So, if you want your default URL to be the www version, then you can 301 redirect your non-www version to the www version. What is Quality Content for Search Engines?

We often hear the SEO advice that ‘Content is the King’, and search engines like Google favor good quality content. Many people confuse it with creating more pages, and they often end up in buying software like spam site generators, automated content generators and scrapping tools. Site-wide links can hurt your rankings

If a site links to another site from every page, those links are called site-wide links. If you are buying links, it may look as a good option to receive hundreds of incoming backlinks for the price of one link, however, most search engines would count only the most powerful link which is relevant. Site-wide links also make your link profile to look artificial, as you’d have hundreds of incoming links with the sama anchor text. Many SEO forums have reported that side-wide links can actually hurt your ranking in search engines like Google, especially when site-wide links constitute a large percentage of the incoming links.

If most of your link popularity comes from purchased site-wide links, Google will eventually find and eliminate the value of these links. So it is advisable to buy few single links that would fly under the radar.

However, it makes me wonder how Google treats blogroll links. Most blogroll links, by default, are site-wide links - Going by the logic of anchor text, it would mean that it is better not to receive blogroll links from huge blogs having hundreds of pages.

Do internal backlinks contribute to PageRank?

Building backlinks from other sites is important for improving a site’s Pagerank. However. many a times webmasters do not pay much attention to the internal linking. So the question is, are the internal links counted as backlinks by Google? And do the internal links contribute to the pagerank?

The answer is Yes. You may ask what is the proof? On Google toolbar you can see that internal links are considered as backlinks. Also you will often see that in most websites the incoming links from external sites connect to the top page contributing to its Pagerank. The top page derives most of the pagerank juice from these inbound links; but you will often see that internal pages also have a pagerank even though they may not have any backlinks from external sites. This pagerank is contributed by the internal backlinks.

Thus we see that there two types of backlinks. Internal and External. External links tell the search engines what pages on your site are considered as important by other people. Internal links are important too; they tell the search engines which pages are important to you on your site. However internal links are not weighed anywhere near as heavily as external links, but they do count towards pagerank. You can see the effect especially when you have hundreds or thousands of your pages indexed.

So the internal linking is also important for gaining overall high pagerank. In your website design, you should try and have a text link back to your homepage from every page of your site. Many sites use Flash and Java navigation and they look great from the user point of view, but their internal pages do not get spidered easily; so you should always include a text link to other pages, preferably using relevant anchor text containing relevant keywords.

It goes without saying that the most important page in your site - the top page - deserves a good backlink from each and every page in your navigation structure. This is one of the easiest ways to create a good internal linking structure, making it easier for search engines to index your site.

This strategy isn’t just limited to your home page, but it can also be applied to other important pages of your site. For example, if you have a blog and want to increase the ranking of a particular post, you could give it a side-wide link on your blog.

Social bookmarking sites for one way links

It is no secret that a website must get lots of quality incoming links for ranking high in search engines. At social bookmark sites you get a public space to post your bookmarks and comments on your favorite web pages to share with other surfers. Most of these social bookmark sites have high PageRank and are heavily spidered by the search engines. These links are one way links from high PR sites, with keywords of your choice in the anchor text and can help you in boosting your link popularity.

So how to go about it? All you need to do is create your account at few such social bookmarking sites. Link to pages from your own sites as well as from some other sites, and refrain from spamming.

You must have recently noticed change in values of Google PageRank and also the number of backlinks in Google. Though PageRank is continuously updated, the updated PageRank is made visible on the Google toolbar once every 3-4 months. Though ‘Google Success’ website was not updated for last 6 weeks, this site achieved a PageRank of 5. It is an evidence that SEO efforts do not show up immediately; they take some time to kick in.

Google PageRank is a measure of the link popularity of a website based on 0 to 10 logarithmic scale. It is also an indication of the importance given to your website by Google. However, a high PageRank does not necessarily mean a high ranking in Google for your keywords. To rank high in Google you should

i) Use on-page optimization to target low competitive keyword phrases on various pages of your website.

ii) Google counts only quality links from relevant websites, so it is better to make your link profile look natural. You should create unique quality content which would be considered valuable by other people in your community. People would then link to your website without you needing to send them link requests. This particularly applies to non-commercial websites.

iii) List your site in quality directories.

iv) Submit articles/press releases about your business to article directories/press release websites such as PRweb.

v) Make sure that you have a good mix of anchor text in your incoming links relevant to your target keywords.

It takes about 3-4　months for the incoming links to improve Google ranking for competitive keyword search phrases.

Anchor text boosts Google Rankings

Recently one of my colleagues showed me that if one searches for the phrase ‘miserable failure’ in Google, the page that shows at the top in the search results is the biography page of George W. Bush at the White House website. If you check the content of the page, there is no phrase ‘miserable failure’ anywhere. First I thought maybe some Google engineer must have played some mischief to rank the page high in Google. However, after doing backlink analysis for the page, I realized that it was the anchor text (link text) which was doing the magic; hundreds of bloggers have linked to Bush’s page using the phrase ‘miserable failure’ as the anchor text. This is a good example of how anchor text can boost Google rankings.

Since anchor text can be used by spammers to trick the search engines, Google’s algorithm also gives importance to other factors such as domain age, link aging and link authority. It is advised not to have the same exact anchor text for all the incoming links to your site; it will be treated as link spamming. You should keep your link profile natural by varying the anchor text.

Keywords are the words average people will search for to find your website. Though Digg is popular with a specific niche of tech geeks, it still rules the world of SEO and Viral Marketing. SEO companies charge thousands of dollars to get content to the top of Digg. If a story becomes popular on Digg, the hundreds or thousands of backlinks it can generate can not compare with the links from other social media sites like Reddit or Netscape. Improved search engine rankings due to these inbound links can save thousands of dollars which the website owners otherwise have to pay on search advertising.

Digg is, however, notorious as many diggers are known to gang up and bury down stories from industries they don’t like. So, if you are in niches like automobiles, real estate, finance, travel etc., Digg may not be the right platform for you.

Search Marketing Contests – Hot or Not?

There are varied industry opinions around search marketing contests, some feel they are a dime a dozen and others feel it is part of the evolution of the web. So in the dawn of web 2.0 – are search marketing contests hot or not?

I think it depends on who’s putting on the contest and what they are measuring. As a search marketer myself, I am not so keen on the search marketing contests that weigh ranking alone.

No good can come from this type of contest. A ranking contest only invites entrants to utilize one of many search engine spamming techniques. True search marketers believe there is a lot more to successful SEO then ranking alone.

Search marketing contests have been going on since 2002. I have never been interested in entering until a search marketing contest from Marketing Pilgrim caught me eye.

This is not your ordinary search marketing contest, the emphasis is on “writing” not necessarily “ranking”. Contest entrants compose a 400-1000 word article on any aspect related to search. Once the article is published on the Marketing Pilgrims Blog, you have 4 weeks to raise awareness and drive “unique visitors” to your article.

The winner is awarded 10,000 worth of prizes, most of which is educational in nature;
Subscriptions to SEO tools, search marketing conference passes, and one on one time with some of today’s nationally known search marketing experts. Search marketing contests like this are definitely HOT.

I decide to enter this years Spring search marketing contest. My article topic is: “So You Wanna Be a Search Marketer” My reason for entering was simple; the scholarship is a great opportunity. The prizes allow you to refine your search marketing skills, something that I spend a lot of time and money on.

SEO What To Avoid !

Don't use the same Title Tag throughout your site. Try using a unique Title tag for each web page and use your most important keywords in the Title tags that hold theme relevance to that page.

Don't use any other META tags such as author, date, etc. unless you absolutely need it. This will just increase your page size and will not do any good to your site.

Most major engines cannot read frames so I will advice you that you don't use it but If you must use frames, include important body text within a tag.

Avoid using completely Flash designs because a majority of major engines can't index flash sites and Flash sites take some time to open fully so it my be frustrating for visitors who don't use a broadband to wait hours for the site to open.

Avoid using JavaScripts or JavaScript links. Spiders cannot crawl links in Java Script so its better that you don't use JavaScripts but if you must use it then make sure that you use a text link at the bottom of each page.
Keyword stuffing: Keyword stuffing refers to the extremely repetition of a keyword when it is not even needed. Many people stuff keywords in their pages in order to increase their keyword density and thus get a high ranking. But be careful as I said its very very risky please don't try this it may get you banned.

Invisible or Tiny text: Many webmasters use tiny text and invisible text in order to rank high by showing lots of text to search engines but at the same time making it invisible for the humans this also viewed as spam.
Never submit more than the allowed number of pages per engine per day or week. Each search engine has a limit and exceeding their limits can be seen as spamming the search engines.

Do not participate in link farms or link exchange programs. Search Engines have identified them as spam and they don't want you to use it.
Don't use "&id=" parameter if you want maximal Googlebot crawlage (many sites use "&id=" with session ID's that Googlebot usually avoids URL's with that parameter).

Don't stuff your page with keywords and no content. The search engines will penalize you for this and view your page as spam.

Do not put redirects or META refresh tags on your page for any reason. They will get your pages banned from the search engines. A common trick used to be to create a page 100% text and highly search engine friendly but of 0% user value, then have a redirect to the real page. This doesn't work anymore - avoid it

Always remember to use navigation menu at the right side of each page of your site, why? because search engines count the first few phrases appearing on the page, this way you would provide the search engines the content first.

Make your site is search engine friendly. Its no use having the best site in the world which no one can find. And for every one's sake don't mess around with hidden layers to get a high listing on the engines. It is JUST NOT worth the risk!

Don't link to a bad neighbor, because linking to a bad neighborhood can get your site banned from the search engines as soon as his site gets banned by the search engine the search engine may ban you also.
